Tribute to the Noordermolen

This is my short tribute to the Noordermolen at Noordijk, Groningen. I come there so often, it is a beautiful nature reserve where many species of birds can be seen. I love to walk here and enjoy nature. It doesn’t matter when you come here, in the morning, afternoon, in the evening, in spring, summer or winter. There is always something to see. The Noordermolen is located on the Noorddijkerweg in Noorddijk, municipality of Groningen. It is an octagonal mill of the ground sailer type built as a polder mill with auger to drain the Noorderpolder. The year of construction of this mill is 1888 and it replaced the mill from 1864 that burned down in that year. The pine octagon is surrounded by half-brick field walls. Hull and hood are thatched. The Noordermolen has a radius of 17.90 meters and is equipped with self-pivoting (valves). The mill builder was J. Lubsen from East Frisia and living in Zuidwolde. The mill was manned by a miller from the 1930s to the 1950s; Eise Jan Eissens. During the Second World War, the mill was a hiding place for Jewish people in hiding. The mill was last restored in 1980. Since then, the mill no longer has a drainage function. The water level in the polder is now regulated via a weir (located close to the mill). The mill opens onto an enclosed part of the Thesingermaar, after which the water flows back into the Noorderpolder (circuit drainage). The mill is operated by a few volunteer millers. In 1999 the thatch (hull and hood) was replaced.
