Today is was a beautiful day, so we decided to visit the Onlanden and climb the new observation tower. De Onlanden nature reserve lies southwest of the city of Groningen. In order to enhance the experience of this valuable nature area, Natuurmonumenten has built a watchtower here. From the tower you have a beautiful view and you can follow the development of the new nature well. The Onlanden area is located is about 2500 ha. big. The name chosen in 2009 owes the area to the combination of large-scale nature development and large-scale water storage, making part of the area ‘onland’ again. The official creed for the project that led to the design of the area is ‘Wet nature for dry feet’. It is a great place to see birds. After we had visited the watchtower, we went to the otherside of the Onlanden and spotted a blue Heron wich was hunting. It’s had catched a mouse.
